Menopause & Hormone Replacement: One Sexologist’s Personal Experience

To my knowledge, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for a woman to remain vaginally active long past menopause without some kind of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It's unfortunate, but each of us must find our own path through trial and error. First off, menopause varies greatly. What many don't know is that more than half of all women in the USA have little to no uncomfortable symptoms. After all, it's a natural transition we all experience. Others suffer with hot flashes, night sweats, sleeplessness, memory loss, etc., symptoms that will eventually pass. However, medical professionals along with our overzealous pharmaceutical companies have turned menopause into a deficiency that needs to be treated.

What We Ask of Those Who Serve

I found this picture last week and thought it was something to share for Memorial Day.

Living in our comfortable bubbles we debate war in such an esoteric, sterile way focusing on our sense of morality and justice.  But if you've ever served you know what is asked of you.

Yet through it all our humanity remains and that's captured so beautifully in this picture.  This is how I see war.

Thoughts on My Profile In GQ Magazine

I'm very happy with my article. My best press yet, in fact. I even received better cover billing than Justin Bieber did.  It was almost two years in the making with all the rewrites and “Which issue will it go in?” questions.

I also want to blog on it to clarify two things for its readers because with lots and lots of rewrites and fact checkers adding and subtracting, some things are lost in translation. Spoiler alert: read the article first before you read this blog post. Then, I’ll talk on some of the behind-the-scenes details.

My clarifications:

Street Artist Targets Bikini Ads in Photoshop Protest

Continuing our theme of imagery that objectifies women - a street artist in Hamburg is adding his finishing touch to bikini ads in the city: the photoshop toolbar.

And I agree with Liandra.  We don't perceive sexualized images of women as human beings because the images are doctored.  Every blemish, dimple, discoloration - everything that would make them seem real - is removed.

We Don't Perceive Women in Sexualized Imagery as Human Beings

I used to think that feminists who got their panties in a bunch over T&A pictorials were a bit sexually repressed but they may be on to something.  Researchers have found that we process sexy images of men vs. women much differently:

"One way that psychologists have found to test whether something is seen as an object is by turning it upside down. Pictures of people present a recognition problem when they're turned upside down, but pictures of objects don't have that problem.

Betty and I are so proud of Eric...he got some critical information in this GQ article about his sex coaching practice.  I scanned the complete article since it won't be online for months.  It's a bit blurry but you can read it. Enjoy:

Betty Inducted into the Masters of Erotic Art Program

Betty started her career as a fine artist.  She painted the classical nude and when the sexual revolution started her nudes started having sex...then they masturbated...then they got political.

One of the first projects I took on when we started working together was to scan her art slides and put them online.  Her work chronicles the rise of feminism, the changing status of women, her own personal sexual liberation, and how traditional gender roles perpetuate the battle of the sexes.

Women Talk About Why They Don't Want to Have Sex

Hi all, yes, I am still around and still busting my ass trying to get this research proposal ready for prime-time.

Recently, I came across a very interesting article on why women lose sexual interest -- even in happy relationships. Karen Sims and Marta Meana conducted a qualitative (in-depth interview based) research study on 19 married women published in The Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy.

There were three main themes that emerged from their data: 1. institutionalization of the relationship, 2. over-familiarity, 3. the problem of de-sexualization. Fancy terms, I know, but what do they mean?

Because Periods are Sexy

This picture is from a photo series by Vice Magazine and I f*cking love it.  There's nothing sexier than seeing blood between a woman's legs.  And sex during your period is a whole different level of intimate.

My pussy is a dynamic reproductive system - not a hole.

Thank you, camlawman, for the link.

The one thing we have total dominion over is our own bodies. We must fight for that, it is imperative to everything I believe in. This is the defining principle of freedom.

There was a Time When Christianity Supported Same Sex Marriage

Last week I was at a corporate dinner when a gentleman - who is quite obviously a homophobe - brought up same sex marriage.  He asked me directly how I felt about our "gay" president and whether Obama losing the Christian vote would hurt his reelection campaign (like Christians voted for him in the first place).

I love it when some asshole gives you the opportunity to school him - I'd just read a piece reposted on boingboing on same sex marriage.  More specifically, how gay marriage was a common Christian rite back in the 11th and 12th centuries:

Republican Approval Ratings Presented In The Form Of Butt Plugs

You can thank Matthew Epler for this clever butt plug/approval rating presentation.

Each shape is determined by voter approval ratings amongst registered republican voters for each of the GOP presidential candidates. The height is a measurement of time, beginning December 10, 2011 and ending on April 1, 2012 (bottom to top). The width of each object is the quantity by percentage (out of 100%) of approval for that candidate. All data comes directly from Gallup polls.

Next Stop in Feminist History: Pola Illery

You can really see who a woman is in a photograph. I knew instantly that I loved her.

Meet Pola Illéry - an exotic silent film star in France and Romania during the 1920s. She was known for portraying sexually liberated women and was considered the most glamorous film star in Romania.

I would have been a flapper.
