Menopause & Hormone Replacement: One Sexologist’s Personal Experience

To my knowledge, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for a woman to remain vaginally active long past menopause without some kind of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It's unfortunate, but each of us must find our own path through trial and error. First off, menopause varies greatly. What many don't know is that more than half of all women in the USA have little to no uncomfortable symptoms. After all, it's a natural transition we all experience. Others suffer with hot flashes, night sweats, sleeplessness, memory loss, etc., symptoms that will eventually pass. However, medical professionals along with our overzealous pharmaceutical companies have turned menopause into a deficiency that needs to be treated.

"Dad Uses Facebook to Teach Daughter a Lesson"

This morning I woke to find a very disturbing video on my Facebook wall. The headline reads “Dad uses Facebook to teach daughter a lesson.” What is the lesson? Misogyny is alive and well in the United States. Dad hates women.

What boggles my mind the most is that this man feels that there is nothing wrong with his misogynistic behavior towards his 15 year old daughter, her privacy, and her computer. Further mind boggling is that people are cheering the dad on for teaching her this valuable lesson.

Misogyny Masked as Morality

I've been pretty angry the last few days.  It looks like the Obama Administration is going to cave into the Catholics and religious zealots and create an "opt out" provision for employers who don't want their insurance programs to cover birth control for women.

We finally get the government to pass a provision under the Affordable Care Act requiring insurance companies to cover contraception - the ink is barely wet and we're right back where we started.  I'm so f*cking sick of having this argument.  No one protested when insurance companies decided to cover Viagra.  The sanctity of the penis is supreme.

If the Masters Had Photoshop

Italian artist/actress Anna Utopia Giordano wanted to show how much the female "ideal" has changed over time. She had the brilliant idea of photoshopping ten famous paintings to conform to the current body aesthetic for women.

The paintings just aren't the same without the flesh and curves. Astonishing.

Gay, Straight or Otherwise Maurice is a Very Relevant Book

There's nothing better sometimes than to curl up with a well-written book, especially on a cold, dreary, winter day. I have been reading E.M. Forster's (posthumous) book, Maurice. Forester is probably more known for his earlier books A Room With A view, Howard's End, and A Passage To India. Maurice, as I mentioned earlier, was not published until sometime after Forster's death in 1969.

Breastfeeding in Public is Beautiful

Carlin recently posted about breastfeeding in public not being a big deal. Some of her Facebook friends got pretty worked up and it sparked quite the conversation. So I thought I’d post some beautiful pics of Maggie Gyllenhaal nursing in public and say a little something more.

I love everything about these. I love that she nursed publicly and obviously. I love that the paparazzi took pictures. I love that she and her baby look so comfortable and that you see joy in her face. You can see the intimacy she and her baby are sharing. You can see pleasure and play.

Sexual Orientation Trumps Humanity?

Gay marriages don’t benefit society the same way hetero-marriages do – believes Rick “The Sanatorium” Santorum. He believes in the intrinsic “good” and sacredness of hetero-marriages. According to Ricky, LGBT pairings just don’t count, and apparently 52 percent of California voters agree.

So both The Sanatorium and the 52 percenters must have puked their guts out Tuesday when California’s 2008 Prop Hate was overturned by the Federal Appeals Court, deeming it unconstitutional.

In the opinion written by Judge Stephan Reinhardt, he maintained that the purpose of Prop Hate was

“...to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples,"

Sex Labels

I've been called every one of these labels at different times in my life.  Aside from "genius", they all cut to the bone.

Wish it wasn't so hard to be a sex-positive woman.

The look on the second girls face says it all.

Red Balloon, Paul Klee, 1922. US Public Domain.

The pressure builds slowly, sometimes imperceptibly. I can almost forget about it. But at a certain point, the tautness can no longer be overlooked or dismissed. Lately I've conceived of this mounting pressure as a balloon filling, slowly at first, and gaining momentum as the weeks pass. By the end, before my balloon releases, the pressure demands notice, requires my attention.

I have been enjoying some of the articles and videos at the New School of Erotic Touch. This is a great website that provides specific information on how to pleasure yourself and your partner. Seriously, their videos Fire in the Valley and The Best of Vulva Massage are among the best I have seen on how to manually stimulate a woman's genitals. And they are a rare thing online.

Kind of ironic, isn't it?  You can flaunt your breasts to titillate men but if you use them for their intended purpose everyone freaks out.

Our Political Differences are Based on Differences in Wiring of Our Brains

A fascinating new study by researchers at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, demonstrates actual cognitive differences between conservative people and liberal people.

“In a series of experiments, researchers closely monitored physiological reactions and eye movements of study participants when shown combinations of both pleasant and unpleasant images. Conservatives reacted more strongly to, fixated more quickly on, and looked longer at the unpleasant images; liberals had stronger reactions to and looked longer at the pleasant images compared with conservatives.”

At first blush, this may not seem like a big thing, but honestly, it helps us to understand why the differences between viewpoints can be so extreme.

"Germany is Laid Back but Female Masturbation & Vulvas are Rarely Discussed"

opened this email from head_space...felt so proud:

Dear Betty and dear Carlin,

I just watched your scenes from the Trekant episode (via the link you provided) and just wanted to thank you both with all my heart for doing this! I live in Germany which is probably similarly laid back about sex in general but female masturbation and vulvas are rarely discussed. I sincerely hope that this documentary is going to be dubbed in several languages because the information and images are so important.
