Indiana University released their national sex survey - we had to review their findings. It seems that the clitoris still reigns supreme.

I just love this piece. Who knew that women get erections just like men:

I f*cking love Madonna.  Last night was amazing.  After watching all those male-centric ads, I was longing for imagery that spoke to my sensibilities and she delivered.

The gladiators...Madonna as Cleopatra...MIA giving the camera the finger...Madonna's crotch cart wheel...BRILLIANT

And it doesn't necessarily mean they're gay...but it does mean that in 1927 men could express deep, platonic feelings for each other with a kiss.

Beautiful.

I've always wondered when the world became gay vs. straight....at what point did our relationships and sexuality get rolled up into tight little boxes of "heterosexual" and "homosexual"?  Hanne Blank explains how it all began in her new book on the history of heterosexuality Straight :

First, we needed language:

Get Ready for SHE-CHANGE

Several years ago, I was invited to take part in one of Faith Popcorn's think tanks. This was long before Occupy Wall Street so I was far more impressed with large corporations that I now see as dinosaurs about to become extinct.

Faith was well paid for her future predictions so all the PR vultures could swoop down and feed off consumers. She’s been very good at calling future trends. Her latest one got my clit throbbing with excitement:

“If you think that women are taking over the world, you’re right. Women control $12 trillion of the overall $18.4 trillion in global consumer spending. By the end of the decade there will be more businesses started by women than men. We’re calling this widespread shift SHE-CHANGE.

Why is a Gold Tablet Story Any More Nuts Than a Stone Tablet Story?

As I was reading the newspaper this morning, there was yet another article regarding Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, and their quests to replace (read "save" America from the evil black man in the White House) President Obama. Etcetera, etcetera. Ad nauseum.

As I was reading this, my wife and I were making comments about each man's professed religious convictions, and I made the comment that even with Newt's "open-marriage" issues hovering around him (as he studiously ignores it), the Religious (evangelical) Right may not exactly like him, and would prefer he was someone more honorable, more "Christ-like" in his past personal life, still, for them he is much preferable to Mitt Romney. Why is that? Romney is (gasp!) a MORMON!!!! (Oh! My! God!)

My Most Political Statement

In my walk home from the office today I found myself sharply focused on a very out- of -nowhere idea.

For some reason I began to think about Obama and our country and what is fair criticism and what is not – in my eyes. In these thoughts I became struck by what is not being said and won’t be because it’s not “allowed.”

I think this: strangers, unconnected human beings, relate to each other in dramatically altered ways since that election.

I am not prejudiced or racist, I swear. Right. I grew up in a very diverse urban neighborhood, of Jewish parents, and I honestly never noticed people of color. Or so I thought. I spent many years in unisex dressing rooms suiting up for the next dance class. All races. All genders.

Making Maxi-Pads From Cellulose

The simple act of getting their period keeps women and girls homebound around the world. They don't have access to sanitary napkins or tampons. Some make due with ash, filthy rags, newspapers - 70% of women suffer from chronic reproductive tract infections due to these unhygenic practices.

Arunachalam Muruganantham was shocked when he saw his wife grabbing some filthy rags from his shop. When questioned, she confessed she'd bought milk for the family and didn't have any money left over to buy herself sanitary napkins. He became consumed with developing a cheap, sanitary napkin for women.

Birth Control Covered by Insurance...No Co-Pay

I breath deeply this afternoon. The Obama administration stood strong and made a decision that is socially sensible.

The decision? For the most part, if you are a female employed in the U.S., you will have the cost of birth control covered with no co-pay - regardless of your employing institution’s religious affiliation.

Churches and other houses of worship will continue to be exempt from having to supply birth control if they don’t believe in it. Forget the overwhelming scientific evidence that shows significant non-contraceptive health benefits to women including reducing the risk of cancer, balancing hormones, and easing cramps.

Did You Know They Had Beach Censors?

“Smokey” Buchanan from the West Palm Beach police force, measuring the bathing suit of Betty Fringle on Palm Beach, to ensure that it conforms with regulations introduced by the beach censors. c.1925

I've found several of these photos and I thought they were jokes until I saw that scene in Boardwalk Empire where a woman on the beach got a ticket because her swimsuit bottoms were too short.

Looks like he's having a great time enforcing the laws.

Why I Believe Antidepressants Don't Work

I'm not going to back down on my belief that antidepressants are overprescribed. I stumbled upon an article by Dr. Levine, a psychologist, who argues that america's mental health industry is a threat to our sanity:

“Prior to psychiatry’s proclamation that depression was caused by too little of the neurotransmitter serotonin, few Americans were taking antidepressants. But by declaring that depression was caused by a serotonin imbalance analogous to diabetes and an insulin imbalance, depressed Americans became far more receptive to serotonin-enhancing drugs such as the “selective-serotonin-reuptake inhibitors” (SSRIs) Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft.

I stumbled upon this youtube clip and had to know more about Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

She was an amazing talent who combined gospel music with rock 'n roll. Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Isaac Hayes and Aretha Franklin all credit Sister Rosetta with influencing their music.

I just can't keep my eyes off her. She's electric.
