Betty Dodson with Carlin Ross
Better Orgasms. Better World.
I sat down this morning to scan facebook when I was confronted by this picture of three women wearing vulva costumes. It was the thumbnail accompanying an article titled "The Unnamed Genitals Have a Name: Vulva" that a number of my friends had shared. Instantly I was reminded of Liandra's post Viva la Vulva and her desire to spread the image of Vulvas everywhere. And here, look! Vulvas on parade on facebook!Hooray!
Cunts need to be visible. I have a suggestion for how to do this but first I want to acknowledge what inspired this blog. Labiaplasty is fast becoming the most popular surgery for young women. It's no worse than breast implants or a nose job or a face lift as a cosmetic procedure per se but what is concerning is it's popularity and why.
My First Bodysex Workshop with Betty Dodson
I only knew Betty for a few months when she asked me to travel with her to Copenhagen. Betty hadn't held one of her bodysex workshops in over 12 years and she was heading to Copenhagen to hold a new workshop with 13 soon-to-be-graduating sexologists. There was no way I was going to miss out on this!
There is little doubt that feminism lost ground with the last two generations of young women. I believe one reason for this has been mainstream feminists focus on rape, incest, and violence against women and girls. It's time to rescue sex from violence. We need to acknowledge sexuality as the life force that allows us to procreate and fuels our creative impulses through repeated experiences with pleasure from orgasms with ourselves and with our partners.
Hi Betty,
I'm writing because I am worried about the size and development of my vulva. My clit, when fully aroused, is smaller than an apple seed and my inner labia are so minisucule that they barely rise above the surrounding tissue. I was anorexic from about 12-16, and then from 16-23 heavily abused alcohol and drugs. I am have been clean and sober for about 2 years now and just had my first orgasm about 6 months ago. I am wondering if my past behavior could have pemanently stunted my sex organs or if this size is normal.

During the month of February in 1973, I was running the next round of sexual CR groups when I got a call from Dell Williams. She insisted I get involved in the planning committee for the NOW Sexuality Conference. Dell would later open the first women's sex shop in New York City. Like me, she too was a Wilhelm Reich enthusiast and we both agreed about the importance of women's sexual liberation.
A subject dear to my heart and clitoris. I have been involved in promoting the diversity of women's sex organs since I showed feminists a vulva slide show at the NOW conference in the early seventies. No woman should ever suffer from feeling there is something wrong with her vulva through lack of positive imagery. See you at the Vulvagraphics Show.

Is it possible that a clit can be too short? Mine is never externally visible, even when I'm aroused... Also, I can masturbate to sort of a mild orgasm in the shower, using the full force of my showerhead's jets, but I've never been able to masturbate to orgasm using a vibrator or just my hands-- they just don't provide enough stimulation. This leads me to think that my clit's just too short to make it out of me enough to to be able to receive any stimulation.
What can I do about this? I'm a virgin, and I worry that if I don't figure out how to orgasm by myself, I won't be able to come when I do finally have sex with my partner.
Thank you very much.
Dear R,
Betty answered the question, I posted it, and it got over 2,000 reads in a matter of hours. We had to put it to bed once and for all.
Hello, I have just left a five+ year relationship with a man who never got me off. I must say I feel partially responsible for this, as I've never been a masturbator, and know very little about my vulva. I watched one of your videos and am now determined to orgasm, but I feel like my genitals have lost sensitivity. Is it possible to kill your clit by ignoring it, and can it come back to life with practice?
Dear Frustrated,
Not to worry. I have never heard of a woman who killed her clit by ignoring it. But your clitoris will obviously be delighted once you begin to give her some tender loving care. Use our search engine and go to "First Time Orgasm." Follow my step by step suggestions.
Is it normal for my labia to be bumpy? I have had numerous exams and I had
a std test last year and have only had sex with one person since. It came
back with nothing. Should I be concerned? it has been bumpy ever since I
can remember.
hi betty,
i am 22 years old and have just recently started to have orgasms again. my first orgasm was when i was 19 years old, it took forever, but the man i was with was very experienced and patient. oh, and i was stoned. it only happened that one time, and i haven't been able to orgasm with a man since. however, upon discovering this mind blowing pleasure, i began masturbating with a shower head. it would normally take between 45 minutes to an hour and a half!
then i went on paxil, and my orgasms stopped. it didn't matter how much time i took, i could not orgasm. no real pleasure for over 2 years! so recently i went off of the medication and i have been able to orgasm again-hallelujah! but...it takes at least an hour and i have to use a shower head.
This is my second submission to the gallery, and I thought I'd actually answer Betty's questions for this one...

just curious... ladies... does the color of your skin on your nipple/areola match the color of your inner labia? i read that when women who lose their breasts due to breast cancer need nipple reconstruction, they use skin from the labia/vagina because it is similar in color and texture to the nipple/areola... so I'm wondering if this is actually true...
my nipples/areolas are pretty much pink, and my inner labia are almost exactly the same color... is that pretty much the norm? the nipples match the labia?
i'd like to know... just a general curiosity
