Every Time I Have Sex with Boyfriend I Get a UTI

Hi Betty,
My boyfriend and I are in a long-distance relationship, so we haven't seen each other since New Year's and we won't see each other until early March. The months leading up to my return to the US, I noticed a gradual build-up of a sort of tickling feeling when I peed, which grew a bit uncomfortable. Around Christmas, it developed into a full-blown UTI--extremely painful, peeing blood, horrible stomachaches and nausea. I was prescribed a heavy dose of Levaquin and sent on my way. It cleared up quickly, and I took care to drink cranberry juice twice a day and take acidophilus. My boyfriend came to visit on New Year's, and since I was feeling okay, we had sex. The next day the stomachache returned, and the UTI was back.

Dear Betty and Carlin,

Love the site, think it is a great educational tool with practical advice and straightforward information - thank you! This is not so much as an ask Betty, but an answer Betty. I am writing as a past sufferer of frequent urinary tract infections after sex - i have noticed there have been some letters to you on this subject and that the only recourse many know has been going down the antibiotic route, which of course then leads to other problems, such as thrush which doesnt help your sex life either, like being caught in a catch 22 situation! You mentioned in one of your replies that if anyone knew of anything to help to let you know.

we have been married 24 years and my wife who is 45 gets bladder infections only when we have intercourse. she never gets one from a vibrator. she has never had an orgasm and i do not think she has a clitoris.

She is very tight since all her childbirths were c-sections. she got her first bladder infection on our honeymoon. she has tried bioidentical hormones but i think the doctor did not know enough about usage. we are trying black cohosh through advice from a naturopath. she went on a yeast free diet too. we stopped having sex since june/08 and were in phoenix last week for 5 days and she got another uti the second last day we were there. I was wondering if you had any suggestions as to what the problem is and how to fix it.
