Betty,
After two hernia operations I have a "dead spot" with no, or diminished sensation in my pubic area. It is in that triangular pubic area above my penis and most of the sensation loss is on my right side. Everything else functions normally, but the sensation just isn't the same during intercourse. It's not too big a deal, but after 4 years will the sensation ever get back to normal?
Dear J,
I'm not a medical doc but general knowledge says nerves can and do regenerate to some degree. I wouldn't expect the sensation to get back to "normal" but be thankful everything else functions. Wait until you get to deal with the aging process. It will make your minor loss of sensation seem like nothing. Count your blessings and have another orgasm.
Dr. Betty
Hi, Not sure how old this
Hi,
Not sure how old this message is, but my husband has had the same kind of operation and he has experienced the exact same problem as you.
He asked his doctor about it, and the answer is as follows:
The central nervous system does not regenerate, but the peripheral nervous system does. Hence, if they cut any main nerves while doing the operation, then that area will be numb for life. On the other hand, if they only cut smaller nerves, they will eventually grow back and you will get your feeling back as well.
Will it be "back to normal" - hard to say, only time will tell. Usually it takes 4-6 months for nerves to grow back, although it can take as much as a year. If you're past the 1-2 year mark and nothing has changed, most likely it never will.
My husband had his operation 15 months ago, and it has gotten a little better but not completely. The key thing to remember is that you will eventually get used to living with it, and it will bother you less and less over time. The doctor said so, and my husband found this to be true as well.
