Better Orgasms. Better World.
As this year comes to an end, I'll miss writing 2002 at the top of each phone log page -- nothing quite as calming as formal balance with a 2 on both ends of 00.
Except for politics, 2002 was a wonderful year for me. I published a new book, Orgasms for Two, and upgraded my Website. My life with Eric is still playful, sexy and happy. Although I lost out on a few orgasms with the added work of finishing the book, I'm grateful for all the joys we did share. Best of all, I continue to enjoy good health.
Since 9/11, NYC put itself back together with style. There was an appropriate time for mourning the loss of life after the Twin Towers went down. But I was appalled at how the Bush Administration milked the tragedy to raise Junior's ratings. The drum beat appeal to the worst elements of patriotism was constant. With all of the flag waving, I shuddered to think we were heading for the kind of chauvinism that is at the root of all authoritarian regimes.
Thankfully some of our excessive patriotism has quieted down. But Bush and his buddies continue to lust for a war to keep us all distracted from a flagging economy and the immense corporate crimes that involved the looting of billions of dollars of stockholder money. Too bad government never got behind the war against poverty or hunger, but right now, the tail is wagging the dog in Washington. We have what we deserve because for some reason, everyone seemed to accept our president-select.
Okay, enough politics -- time to count a few blessings. I'm exceptionally grateful for the Internet which makes it possible for millions of people communicate without government censorship. This is what we called "people power" back in the sixties. Having an Internet Website has made it possible for me, the first time in my career as a sex educator, to express my opinions without fear of being censored. And It's quite exhilarating to know that my website currently is getting almost 4,000,000 hits a month, of whom about 200,000 are first time visitors. Sexual pleasure is alive and well in America in spite of the media.
My webmaster, Grant, and I were talking recently when he reminded me that bettydodson.com is a childhood dream of his come true. He had always wanted to publish some kind of sex magazine. I think he's doing a great job and so do our visitors. With almost every email we get compliments, thanks or accolades. So thank you Professor Grant for your original vision to create the Website and all your dedication in keeping it current.
My cousin David Bell was recently brought on board to build my new shopping cart. Just before we got it up, I tried to order something from my site and finally gave up because it was so frustrating. Now we have a smooth running method to order from my Sex Shop. It will be my job to make the next video, write the next book, and pick out another sex toy. I'll be on it right after the holidays.
On the P.R. front, my new book, Orgasms for Two, got its biggest plug from the O'Reilly Factor. Bill O'Reilly can be a big bully and we certainly don't share the same political views, but I'm very glad to have gotten the exposure. On Christmas Eve, O'Reilly did a rerun of our interview and the sale of my book soared again. I was not able to say the title of my book because Bill said it was a "family show." Seems someone can't handle the word "orgasms." My take is that it's the adults, not the children. Anyway, thanks Bill for promoting my book.
We need another sexual revolution to move toward pleasure and away from pain. Today the younger generation doubts the stories we oldsters tell about the dynamic times of the sixties and seventies. It sounds as if they happened in our dreams. For many years I've been writing a memoir I recently titled, My Sexual Revolution. It will be the next book I publish. As a matter of fact, the first half is ready to go to my publisher right now.
I'm grateful I kept journals during the time when sex was on a liberal course with the breakdown of censorship barriers, the pill, rock music, marijuana, black civil rights, women's liberation, legalized abortion, and the gay, lesbian, and bisexual pride movements. Otherwise, I might think it was all a dream too.
Yes, the one thing we can count on is that the pendulum will continue to swing back and forward again. Remember, thought creates form so visualize your Grandmother's clock with the shiny brass pendulum ticking its way to a more liberal America once again. Don't buy into all the fear propaganda. Stand firm and enjoy your body, your sexuality, your work, your creative projects, your friends and your family. Happy New Year 2003.
