Ukraine Elects Female PM

remember that adorable princess lea look alike with the braided hair? Well, she swept the elections and is now the first female PM of the Ukraine.

I can just see it: Hillary is elected president & Mariella Castro Espin (Raul's daughter and from what we hear in cuba the next in line after Fidel) takes over and we put an end to the embargo. We already have Merkel in Germany pushing to save the environment and we just landed the Ukraine. And the women rule the world and put an end to all the BS. What a great story:

Yulia Tymoshenko was elected Ukraine’s prime minister Tuesday.

Tymoshenko got 226 votes - the bare majority needed in the 450-member parliament - from deputies in her bloc and the party of President Viktor Yushchenko. Tymoshenko and the president formed a majority coalition after this fall's elections, despite frequent tensions between the two.

Before the vote in the Verkhovna Rada, Tymoshenko declared that the coalition was solid.

"You have two patriots in politics who will hold this flag up high and never drop it. Today's vote is a moment of truth for the democratic coalition," she said.

However, the vote count indicated the difficulties ahead for the Yushchenko-Tymoshenko coalition. The opposition dominated by the Party of Regions, which is led by pro-Russia former prime minister Viktor Yanukovych, is in strong position to fight initiatives by the Western-leaning reformist coalition.

Loyalties switch frequently in Ukrainian politics and an attempt to return Tymoshenko to the premiership in 2006 derailed when a formerly allied party crossed over to join a coalition with Party of Regions.

Tymoshenko was the most energetic and vivid figure of the 2004 Orange Revolution mass protests that helped power Yushchenko into the presidency. The protests broke out after a fraud-plagued presidential election in which Yanukovych was declared the winner. The Supreme Court annulled the election and Yushchenko won the rerun.

The Orange Revolution left her and Yushchenko in deep opposition to Yanukovych.

Good for her! And lucky that the press in other countries doesn't tear women politicians apart for their fashion choices as much as the US does.

Keep dreaming. I'm not saying it would hurt to have a woman in charge, but the idea that if women took charge suddenly all the problems would disappear is kinda silly. It's kind of like armchair quarterbacking. When you're sitting comfortably at home, it's easy to say "I could do better". But when you get into the real world, things aren't so easy.

I figure if Hillary wins, she might fix some things, but she's probably going to find all new ways to make mistakes, too. Nobody is perfect, and the location of your dangly bits doesn't make you any smarter or more capable. If anything keeps her from making mistakes, or repeating the mistakes of the past, it will be one thing and one thing only. The knowledge that she is the first female president, and that anything and everything she does will be scrutinized and used to 'set the bar' as it were. If she screws up, she can expect to be crucified for it, and it'll be a long time before another woman gets elected. People are silly that way. :P

Maybe in Canada they are silly that way, but here in the US we apparently love when Presidents screw up...in fact, we love it so much that we re-elect them for 4 more years...go figure :)

Here are the main reasons why I'm voting for Hillary and why her presidency is so important to our culture:

1. Because I'm tired of hearing how a female president would deploy nuclear weapons because SHE HAD HER PERIOD

2. Because I'm tired of hearing how women have a submissive nurturing nature

3. Because the whole career vs. family choice every woman is plagued with is a bunch of BS. You can't have it all on once but you can have it all over the course of your life. Kids grow up and when they do you can run for President.

4. Because every little girl on the face of this planet will know that she could become the leader of free world. That alone is worth my vote.

CB - I hope you have some other, more solid and political, reasons to vote for her...

The reasons you gave are... shall we say, not really productive to the current situations that are taking center stage these days i.e. the War, health, immigration, abortion...

somehow I don't think even Hillary would want to be elected for the reasons you gave that you are voting for her.

In all honesty though, I can't really talk too much. I find her and Obama to be more or less alike in most respects, and the reasons I'm voting for Obama are that Hillary doesn't strike me as being as honest as Obama, and the second being that I just can't stand the woman. damn, she's annoying.
