It's official. You can track your posts and any responses under "My Account" in the top right corner. Click on "My Account", click on the "track" tab and you can see the activity from your comments/posts.
If you click on the "contact" tab you can email other users on the site.

I definitely agree that improving the community features of this website would be amazing.
On some forums there is a 'subscriptions' page in which a user can see all the threads they have subscribed to, and whether or not there has been any further posts in them. Then, a person can choose to automatically subscribe to each thread they post in. A subscriptions page allows a person to quickly check if anyone has responded to the conversations they were interested in.
I sometimes go back and post in quite old posts on this website and never go back to them. It would be cool if there were a way to know if someone ever responded to the comments I made. :p
