Betty Dodson with Carlin Ross
Better Orgasms. Better World.
OK, so here's my rant. A House episode a few months back started like
this. A middle aged woman opens the door of her home to a younger
woman dressed in a business suit. They have a conversation that makes
it sound like the younger woman is, perhaps, a real estate agent whom
the older woman is hiring to sell her property.
The older
woman goes into the bedroom and retrieves a large amount of cash. On
her way back to the living room, she collapses. The younger woman is
then shown in the bedroom doorway dressed as a BDSM domme, complete
with whip. She calls the paramedics.
Next scene: Older woman
lying in her hospital bed, explaining that she's 56 or 57 or something;
that her mother died at this age; and that she had decided to
experience everything she could right now because she believed she
could die soon. Turns out that she had flown to Brazil, engaged some
male prostitutes, had a wonderful, wild orgy....and contracted an
unknown but very dangerous disease. I stopped watching at that
moment. I'm sure she was eventually cured.
What is my
rant? For golly begesus, what kind of message does that send? Here is
a woman who has decided to FINALLY do all the things she's fantasized
about, to really live life fully. And she's punished by getting a
disease that almost kills her. IT REALLY PISSED ME OFF!
Of
course it's only a TV show. But everything on TV communicates a
message. This message: Don't risk it, woman, 'cause you'll be
punished. Just keep doing what you've been doing til you die.
Gnashing her teeth....AK
Mea culpa
I give. I should have watched the whole show. I just couldn't stand it after the first 15 minutes. If it comes on again, I will watch it.
I agree about the prostitute. She was portrayed well.
Thanks for filling me in. I'm calm now.
***Contains spoilers***
I'd like to add that I really liked the prostitute character. She was a human being instead of a cold demoralized money-hungry bitch that I would expect from a tv show.
First she risked being charged with prostitution by calling the ambulance. Then she spent time with the client she barely knew just to reassure her. I loved the scene when she asked Willson to notify her about the lady's wellbeing.
There were other prostitutes in the House series and all of them were portrayed as women who knew what they were doing with their life instead of waiting to see what life will do to them.
Umm
Go back and watch the rest of the episode.
Though getting a disease is something that can happen, its not what happens in the show. Before ranting at least see what happened. And I thought that the way they handled the intro prostitute was well done. She was a really woman that wasn't being abused, which isn't how most prostitutes are depicted on television.
And I must say that I think we shouldn't demonize sex, I think that you should be able to have sex whenever and with whoever you want. And no the diseases that can be transmitted via sex shouldn't dissuade us from it. However the illusion that it cant happen is just as dangerous. We have to take full responciblity for our actings in everything including sex.
So I don't think that its wrong for the show to have touched on the idea that yes because she did engage prostitutes on a trip abroad and that can have caused her symptoms. Though again if you finish watching the episode thats not what caused her symptoms.
