Usually, I try to keep things light on the boards or limited to debates about sexual politics but I froze when I read this stat: Child hunger IN THE US rose 50% in 2007.  More than 700,000 children when hungry.

WTF?  Record profits for Exxon Mobil....Halliburton...Wall Street execs...all on the backs on our children.  This isn't fucking Africa where decades of civil war over land rich with resource has pushed so many into poverty.  This isn't Iraq or Afganistan where war has ravaged the country forcing children into prostitution to feed their families.

I'm ashamed of my country and our obsession with wealth and celebrity.  What about our children?  What about families?  We are the superpower of the world and we owe it to our people to assure every man, woman, and child has a roof over their head, food in their belly, healthcare, and schooling.

God damn America!

I completely agree....I even

I completely agree....I even counseled Betty to pull her money out of the market.  I have no faith in our economy.

I worked in the securities industry and got the score.  But I'm shocked that there is no safety net in our country for children.  I think it's the double whammy: $1 trillion lost in the Iraq war and $2 trillion lost in our sham of an economy.

There is an underlying arrogance that disgusts me.  And don't get me started our our bs healthcare system...

Actually, about your health

Actually, about your health care system... you wouldn't believe how many americans I know via the internet who will rant endlessly about the horrors of socialism, and how socializing health care will somehow make the system fall apart, etc... but the simple fact is that among industrialized nations, America is one of the tiny minority that DOESN'T have some kind of universal health care, and as it is the american health care system costs nearly twice as much (as a percentage of the nation's GDP) as Canada's health care system. And America is already socializing the real estate and financial 'industries' with these massive bailouts that only prolong the inevitable by propping up a failing institution with money that has to come from somewhere.

Problem's been a long time

Problem's been a long time coming, and it's a result of the American culture of buying on borrowed money. I'm not an economist, so I'm not going to try to go into any great detail, but the basic gist of it is this: As a nation, you guys have been borrowing money to feed your consumer driven economy. You can only go so far with that before it all comes crashing down on your heads.
