In a properly fitted bra
In a properly fitted bra underwire does not put any pressure on breast tissue, so I wouldn't be bothered :) I think it can cause harm if you're wearing a badly fitted bra and underwire does not lie flat on your chest under the breasts but on your breasts instead. In a well fitted bra no such thing happens :)

When the size and shape of the bra fits nothing digs in! It's only wrong sized bras that are uncomfortable!
There is one but:
If you are wearing a correct size (and shape) nothing digs in - there are no lumps or other abnormal growths. If the size is incorrect the underwire will dig in and this may cause lumps. Those lumps are connected to cancer.
The wires should go around and under the breast. Not across it. My boobs hurt when I look at some photos.
Good bra helped my breasts regain shape. It was certainly safer cheaper and more pleasant than an operation would be.
