Better Orgasms. Better World.
In the past I used pads almost exclusively. Tampons were inserted when I had swimming lessons or when I wanted to masturbate and was afraid I'll stain the sheets (I've used a tampon less than 10 times).
During previous cycle I visited my grand mum - she lives in the other part of my town. I forgot to take extra pads and flooded everything. I had to stuff cotton wool inside a borrowed pair of panties to go to the nearest shop and buy some protection. I got angry. I decided that I may as well try the cup since I've been wondering about it for the past few months.
My only concern was that I wouldn't be able to use it because my vagina isn't comfortable with penetration 90% of the time.
Even when I'm so aroused I'm practically dripping there is some initial pain (funny that isn't the case with anal penetration which is supposed to be harder). And the tampons were always painful to insert - I think I wasn't even able to get them as far as I should - they just leeched all the moisture from my vaginal walls and got stuck.
So I got on eBay and bought small LadyCup for $35. It arrived quickly - the company is from Czech Republic (Yuuki cups are also Czech) it had to only cross one border (no customs because of Shengen). My mother was horrified - the way she saw the cup it could be a torture device. She's never been able to use tampons - she got dizzy before she even started inserting one. I think she should try the cup because, with her heavy periods, it would be perfect. But she thinks even the small LadyCup is too big. I had a dry run - not exactly dry since I earlier masturbated to orgasm to mimic the effects of period - moisture and relaxation. I decided that I will be able to use it and put it in the drawer.
Here's How it Went:
Day 1 (Friday)
11:00 AM I suspected I would get my period today so I've taken the cup with me to school. During first break I noticed some bright spotting as opposed to the brownish one from yesterday. My period has arrived! I waited for some privacy. Then I took out the cup and squatted on the floor - I was afraid that if I tried inserting the up sitting on the toilet I would drop it into the bowl. I added a bit of lube - that turned out to be a mistake - the cup got slippery. When I finally managed to inset it, it wouldn't unfold. I had to remove it (ouch!) and put it in again. Luckily after the second insertion I managed to position it properly - or so I hoped. I will know when I check the back up pad in an hour.
11:40 AM The stem seems to be too long/too sharp - I feel it digging in. Maybe it's the design of the stem - not the length.
12:00 AM Checked the back up pad - no leeks - yay!
4:00 PM When I'm walking I feel tiny bubbles of air exit my vagina and then travel along my vulva - very pleasant feeling. Hope it doesn't mean leaking.
7:00 PM This time the placement wasn't painful. It's because VirginMonoblogger saved my ass (or rather pussy) by posting a link to a video about alternative folding techniques. My cup is small and on a harder side and "punch down" works wonders. I'm surprised cup companies don't mention different folds in the manuals. If I was to keep using "the painful C" I would probably love and endorse cups less. But I would still use them because the benefits are so great. I managed to fill only about one fifth or fourth of the cup. If I was using a pad for that long even my trousers would stink like hell by now. I'm off to my friend's. She's curious about the cup and wants a review when I'm done testing.
Day 2 (Saturday)
8:30 AM Emptied and replaced the cup. Now I'm going out to get my fringe cut. The walk is about 30 minutes in a fast pace. Then I'll have to help my mother with shopping.
2:00 PM The cup worked beautifully when I was out but I got some awful cramps as soon as I returned. I think I might have made them worse by suction when I replaced the cup. It didn't have to be changed - I guess I overestimated my flow. I'm going to take a nap.
6:00 PM The cup experience gets better. The cramps stopped after the nap and I hardly feel the stem now.
Day 3 (Sunday)
11:00 AM I experienced my first leak or maybe not. Suffice to say my panties were pale red. I think it was because some of the blood didn't get into the cup the I was sleeping, got a bit coagulated and then managed to drip down when I was changing the cup. Later when I was masturbating (I've been doing it a lot lately - why didn't other users write about this advantage?) it got diluted with my juices and when I put on my panties it stained them. But like I said - it was pale and didn't even come close to soaking through.
Day 4 (Monday)
4:00 PM No changes except I get more and more skilled with every replacement. I stopped being afraid about getting an UTI. I had a very painful UTI from trying to find my G-spot two years ago and a milder but persistent one last year. My urethra still clenches in fear every time urine doesn't come out straight away. I don't think I will have to replace the cup more often than the maximum time - 12 hours.
Day 5 (Tuesday)
8:00 PM The crisis finally came. I got horrendous cramps and various digestive problems that polite girls don't discuss publicly. There was almost no blood in the cup so I left it out. I took two Ibuprofens and decided to free bleed for a bit.
12:00 PM I feel much better now. The problems stopped and there is some blood coming out of me. I'm going to insert the cup and go to sleep.
Day 6 (Wednesday)
13:00 AM I had the cup during PE. We were working out at the gym. I had no problems. I tried a treadmill, a stationary bike, a rowing machine and other equipment. No complaints. I had lots of fun.
The verdict:
So this concludes my experiment. I think that my cup was a good investment and considering I paid for it more than for any of my beloved sex toys that says something.
If I compare the difficulties I experience with pads to those described here, there is no question which is better. I had to take pain relievers only once (the other time I managed to go by). Normally I can have 2-3 days of constant pain. I had to hand wash my panties only twice (one time was after the first day - I painted them red with my fingers when I was reinserting in the public bathroom). With pads it's almost every time I change the pad - I have full thighs that move the panties and the pad around. I can sleep butt naked - it's the only sleepwear I tolerate. I use nightshirts only when we are having guests or when I'm down with the cold. Now I can wear no panties 28 nights per cycle! Insertion isn't painful since I found a perfect folding technique and removal is only a bit tricky but not really painful. But remember that I only buy toys with "mini" in their name for vaginal penetration. A woman who has a better tempered vaginal opening will experience no discomfort.

Yay!
Though your experience wasn;t perfect, I'm happy it worked out for you! The first morning after I used mine, I spilled blood all over my bathroom floor because I figured there was nothing inside of the cup, lol. It's nice because, on light days, I don't have to think about "Oh, shit! Has it been 8 hours?!", because they aren't tampons, so I don't have the risk of TSS.
Before I used the cup, my cramps were almost unbearable. Coupled with diarrhea and fatigue, my menstrual experiences in the earlier part of high school were horrible. I noticed a change in cramps, too, when I used the cup. There's nowhere near gone, but they're more bearable.
When I sneeze or cough with my cup inserted, my pussy releases little "bubbles" of air. I enjoy them, too, because they often pass over my clit. :) When I masturbate with the cup inserted and I have an orgasm, it disloges and I start to leak, likely because of the vaginal contractions. I still leak with the cup, but not as often as I did with tampons.
Anyway, I think your next experience will be even better. The "C" folding technique just didn't work for me at all. I'm glad the video helped! <3
thanks for sharing
Dear Wild Orchid,
Thanks for sharing your experience in so many details. (i hope and believe that may encourage more women to use cups )
So I am using the Diva Cup and I also experience less crampy periods with it.
One suggestion: if the stem hurts you, why not cut it? The cup I use has a smaller stem, however I still felt the edge - and that was uncomfortable. After cutting off a bit it was actually better.
I love this post!
It's one of those posts that really make me think that if we all just talked about our menstrual experiences more openly, to this level of detail, we'd all be happier and more comfortable with ourselves.
I'm only just getting to grips with talking about mine - one day I'll progress to a level where I can talk openly about my period to my boyfriend! I don't think it helped that my mum was all hush-hush about it when I first started. She didn't mind talking about it to me, in fact she's quite open about it now with me, but initially she put a lot of emphasis on being discreet. Also didn't help that my periods were both irregular and rare - I had 3 or 4 a year, if that.
Now that I'm regular (I know you hate the pill VMB, but I need it to make me bleed!) I'm getting more comfortable with it, and a bit less clumsy each month.
Ooh, and I bought a Moon Cup to try out! Sadly I ordered it at the end of my last period, so I haven't been able to try it out yet =[ Give me a week or so!
Do any of you get 'slurping' noises with your cups? It's the only negative comment I've found out about them. I.e. when you're removing it, I guess it makes some sort of suction slurp? Sorry to use the word slurp, doesn't exactly bring pleasant images to mind!
If the pill works for you,
If the pill works for you, then go for it! It ruined my insides, lol.
Me and synthetic hormones just don't get along.
I do sometimes
get a slurping noise. It's not really a slurp, Just a wet, sticky
noise. I can't really describe it. It mostly happens when the cup pops open and I rotate it to get suction. For me, it doesn't make much noise during removal.
Just a heads up that if you
Just a heads up that if you find the stem painful, you can use a pair of nail scissors to trim it to a more desireable length. I had to remove mine entirely for that reason, but still find getting my mooncup in and out no problem!

A few things...
#1 I use a divacup. I like it. Been using it for a couple years now.
#2 The "7 fold" works well for me. Google it.
#3 After you insert the cup, take a washcloth or toilet paper and kinda stick it up your cunt to wipe off excess blood because sometimes if you don't, it will look like you've leaked but it wasn't necessarily leakage, but blood that was coming out when you initially inserted the cup.
#4 I know the cramps you're talking about and I'm pretty sure they are caused by suction. When that happens, I take it out and reinsert it leaving a little more air in the cup so that I don't get quite as much suction from it the second go-round.
#5 I've found the cups aren't always that awesome for sleeping through the night, especially the first day or two of heavy bleeding. I haven't figured out the remedy for that though except just free bleeding or using a pad.
#6 I like the cup for a few reasons but it does have some drawbacks -- I have to remove it to take a crap. I cannot crap with it in... either it constricts my colon or I push it out too far. That's kind of annoying.
#7 I cut the stem completely off of mine... all the way to the hilt. It works just fine and now I don't feel that long annoying thing anymore.
