Better Orgasms. Better World.
One of you good people sent me a link to the documentary Hot and Bothered: Feminist Pornography.
The film gives some insight into how pornography and feminism have combined to show a side of female sexuality that was previously not, or under, represented on the screen. In true feminist style, the film makers chose to interview women who have actually worked in the porn industry, to give their opinion about women's roles in adult cinema.
The film shares some interesting facts, particularly regarding female porn performers who were dissatisfied with certain aspects of their work and took it upon themselves to make a change, like Dr. Sharon Mitchell who co-founded the AIM Healthcare Foundation in the late 90s during an outbreak of HIV in the industry. The film also brings up some other very important issues that rarely see the light of day, like the fact that while pornography often shows a very limited view of female sexuality, it also often shows a very limited view of male sexuality. Wouldn't it be nice to see a documentary that thoughtfully addressed that issue?
You can view Hot and Bothered: Feminist Pornography online. FYI the video is on a pornographic site.
