Better Orgasms. Better World.
This short video deals with our insane cultural attitudes about sex. Our society is so dichotomized about this issue. On one hand, the most searched term on the internet is "sex", pornography brings in billions of dollars a year in revenue, and yet abstinence based sex ed has been the rule for years, vibrators are illegal in some states (sadly, I happen to live in one), and politicians want to plan your family for you.
The importance of sex is blown way out of proportion by the mass media, and reflects our cultural hysteria around sexuality. The more something is repressed in our unconscious (Freud 101, here), the more preoccupied we are by it. The technical term for this is erotophobia, and it seems like everybody has it in one form or another.
One of my favorite examples of this trend was the case of Joanne Webb, the Texas homemaker and former school teacher, who was arrested in 2004 for selling vibrators at a Passion Party ( kind like a Tupperware party but with dildos). Her story was featured in the great documentary Passion and Power: The Technology of Orgasm.
When her attorney Beann Sisemore tried to discuss the ridiculousness of this case with the legal authorities involved, she jokingly asked, "What's the deal with the war on the clitorises?" The guy involved with the case looked up, dumbfounded, and hastily replied that he wasn't going to arrest the "clitorises" just Joanne Webb. Frankly, I think that about sums it up in a nutshell.
Illegal??
I had absolutely no idea vibrators are actually illegal in some states. Whilst guns remain legal.
Says it all really, doesn't it? I don't know what to say about that.
(Insightful video by the way, which perfectly highlighted the ridiculous attitudes which prevail).
A sane and sex-positive world . . .
Lilith, thank you so much for posting this simple, powerful video. It says so much about American society that devices for killing are freely available almost everywhere, but devices for giving harmless pleasure can be against the law. I knew that sex toys were illegal in Alabama, but I hadn't heard about the story of Joanne Webb, or the tragedy of Jessica Logan, until you posted this.
Society in the United States is filled with titillation but woefully short on satisfaction. Prime-time television and films are chock-full of teasing glimpses of nudity and implied sex, but virtually never show the actual human body or the act of love itself. Our anti-sexual culture can be traced directly back to early Christianity. Some of the works of the early Catholic "fathers" have to be read to be believed. I remember one "saint" who likened women and sex to chamber pots and defecation. This was typical. As the late philosopher Walter Kaufmann wrote, "Christianity is the religion that made love a sin."
So our sad legacy is the hysterical Western (now chiefly American) terror of erotic pleasure and the body, combined with a pseudo-erotic fixation on guns and violence. Gun magazines feature Playboy-like spreads of various weapons in all their murderous glory. It's crazy to worship these killing devices, yet a substantial minority of Americans do just that.
A sane and sex-positive world would be a vastly less violent world. Let's never forget that, and work tirelessly for it.
Cover by?
I know this is a tangent, but I love this cover of "Don't Fear the Reaper," and Soundhound and Shazam are failing to match it. Who is it?
Lady Grinning Soul . . .
Yes, it really does say it all. To the best of my knowledge, though, a vibrator such as the Hitachi Magic Wand would not be illegal in most such states, because it has other 'legitimate' purposes besides sexual pleasure. Whereas a vibrating dildo, say, would be illegal. I'm not sure what the laws would say of something like a Fleshlight. I haven't got the heart to look into it further.

@ LilithLand:
Thanks for posting the video. That was kind of making me sad watching it... I think the prohibition to sell vibrators is just to control the sexuality of women. Thank God I'm living in Europe.
I am glad you all enjoyed the
I am glad you all enjoyed the video. Some of this is truly ridiculous. Where I live, vibrators are illegal. If you go into a sex toy store here, (and yes we do have them) you have to fill out something indicating that you have a medical problem which would necessitate the use of the story's "novelties". They aren't referred to as vibrators. God only knows why.

"If you go into a sex toy store here, (and yes we do have them) you have to fill out something indicating that you have a medical problem which would necessitate the use of the story's "novelties"."
Wow... That's... strange... To fill out something indicating that you have a medical problem to get vibes. The main thing is that you don't need a prescription by the doctor to get some "novelties"...
I wouldn't be surprised...
