Better Orgasms. Better World.
Birth control details are as important to me in sex education as sex technique and connection. I was talking with Olivia the other day, discussing our plan to steer clear of pregnancy for her despite the fact that we have sex part of the month without condoms. First, Olivia is on birth control, however, we're aware that birth control is not perfect, so we still follow the pattern of her cycle, called popularly, the rhythm method. We have sex without condoms, as you saw in my last blog post with her, after her menstrual flow has stopped, which for her cycle, is the first seven days or so of the month. Then we switch to condoms until that time again next month.
I've heard tell that some people will wait longer before going to condoms, however that forgets an often overlooked fact and alternate strategy for pregnancy. In health class and The Miracle of Life movie, it assumes the egg is already on its way down the fallopian tube or about to enter the uterus. the man ejaculates inside the vagina and the sperm start swimming up. Some live, some dont, but they fertilize the egg from a single ejaculation. The other strategy, as I call it, involves the fact that sperm can live up to five days inside the uterus. If I come inside Olivia on the first of the month, all the sperm will be dead by the 5th at the latest. If I come in her on the 2nd of that same month, and ejaculate more inside, that's a second round of millions of sperm cells. However, they're all dead by the 6th, and so on.
The key here is the multiplicative effect of multiple ejaculations that take place at least once a day for say, a week. That's considerably more sperm cells in the uterus waiting to ambush the hapless egg cell if it comes down. The sperm dont have to meet the egg. in this case, the egg meets the legion upon legion of sperm cells that are still alive in the uterus from several days before. Keep this in mind when practicing the rhythm method in addition to your other contraceptive modes, which I always recommend. Combinations are powerful in many places in life.

Condom Free Days w/Better "Rhythm" Method?
If you guys want even more assurance during your condom free days, and you are willing to put a little more time into tracking her body changes, you could add cervical secretions, basal body temperature and the position and feel of the opening of the cervix to your determination of non-fertile days (Symptothermal Method.) Since the female cycle is never exactly the same from month to month, more careful observation could give you extra condom free days. Plus, checking the cervical mucus can be so fun
.
From personal experience, my husband I dated throughout college, and I used the pill, but it always made my body feel off. So, after college and marriage, we switched to condoms + Symptothermal only. With this combo, the anticipation build-up to the condom free days was a bonus! That kept us baby free for the next 6 years.
Looking back to that time, we were not, however, making the effort required to enjoy lots of sex (what a waste of our 20s and 30s!) MASSIVE amounts of sperm was not an issue for us. So sad.
But hey, it’s never too late to learn, and my husband and I are turning over a new leaf at 41, beating back that feeling that we are “old.”
Your blog has become one way that we use to renew our passion for each other. I copy your blog (the hot stuff, not your iodine issues) to my Kindle and read bedtime stories to my newly rediscovered sweetie. The combination of your writing from a male perspective about real experiences does it for us. Good stuff Eric!
