CDC: Sex Infections Growing Because of Abstinence Only Sex Ed

A real government agency has finally said it...the emperor has no clothes on...10 years of abstinence-only sex ed hasn't kept kids from having sex at all.  They still have sex, it's unprotected, and sex infections are spreading rapidly.

The latest statistics on chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis show that these three highly treatable infections continue to spread in the United States.

"Chlamydia and gonorrhea are stable at unacceptably high levels and syphilis is resurgent after almost being eliminated," said John Douglas, director of the division of sexually transmitted diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"We have among the highest rates of STDs of any developed country in the world," Douglas added in a telephone interview.  Did you hear that "hightest rates of STDs in the developing world"?

And who is the most affected by all this: 15 to 19 year old girls.  We sexualize them, objectify them, cripple their self esteen, and send them out into the world without any information about how to protect themselves or enjoy sex.  And we block their access to contraception and abortion at every turn: 87% of US counties don't even have a clinic and if they do there are mandatory waiting periods, parental consent, and scare tactics like showing them pictures of fetuses to mire them in red tape and guilt.  So they contract STDs and they get pregnant.

I've never heard anyone speak about holding young boys accountable for their sexual decisions.  It hasn't come up once.  We may not burn young women at the stake for being "witches" but we condemn them to a life of poverty for being sexual beings.

I believe that you can judge a culture by the way it treats it's young women - the mothers of tomorrow.  Shame on you conservatives. Shame on you Bush Admin.  Shame on you Operation Rescue.

Carlin,

I just recently discovered your and Betty's video clips on youtube.com. Great stuff, really like the way you both address many interesting topics about the "humanity of sexuality". Also, I must admit that I developed kind of a crush on you (who can resist that smile). Hope you do not mind ....

Keep up the great work.
