Better Orgasms. Better World.
I've been watching the health care debate and all the statements about abortion. I do believe that Nancy Pelosi was torn about the Stupak-Pitts Amendment barring women from using their insurance to pay for abortions (if your policy is subsidized by the government by a penny then you can't use it to get an abortion) and having to concede to conservatives to get the new healthcare bill through the house.
But hearing Obama state publically that "this is a healthcare bill not an abortion bill' has my panties in a bunch. As a young woman, abortion is part of your health care. No form of birth control is 100% and women choose not to become mothers because they can't afford it and they know that being a single mom relegates you to a life of poverty. So you make the choice. And why is that choice NOT part of my healthcare but the choice to have a child IS?
It's amazing to me that abortion is still such a hot button issue. If you don't believe abortion is moral, don't have one. But don't live in denial and act like it's not a part of every woman's life. My life is worth more than any genetic material that may find itself unexpectedly implanted in the wall of my uterus. And if I choose NOT to become a mother that is a valid choice that should be covered by my health insurance.
I agree. However, when I
I agree. However, when I realized that abortions are covered free and clear with my insurance, whereas birth control costs somewhere between $10-$25 per month [depending on what birth control, excluding IUDs and such], I can see how some people can argue that women would use abortions as their primary form of birth control. Despite that, just about any woman who has been through that experience probably doesn't want a repeat performance, even if they do not regret their decision [I don't regret mine]. Abortions need to be at least covered partially, because many women do not have several hundred dollars, up to several thousand dollars, plus travel expenses, in order to get an abortion. Abortions need to be available to everyone, no matter their insurance policy. All women, poor or rich, young or old, should have control over what happens to their bodies, and if/when they have children.
