I'm so hoping that Obama is going to end Don't Ask Don't Tell because the numbers are in and women are disproportionately dismissed under this idiotic policy. Women make up just 14% of the military yet they account for 36% of dismissals under Don't Ask Don't Tell. And it turns out that most were dismissed from the Air Force. Seems Top Gun women aren't interested in Tom Cruise.
Now to the why (because I have to go there). My knee jerk reaction as a woman who chose a male-dominated profession is that these women are under the microscope. They're not exactly welcome and the male counterparts know that if they make an allegation of open homosexuality that she's gone (like Tasha's storyline in The L Word). I know that when I worked in the legal world that you had to give 150% everyday and you could never make a mistake.
What's bizarre is that lebians are so popular in our culture that you'd think they'd be like the mascots everyone wanted to see make out. There's a certain amount of hostility here. Women are so unrespresented in the military. To think that they make up 36% of dismissals is just crazy. Sorry but I just can't buy that every woman who enlists is a raging dyke. So many women join the armed forces simply to go to college.
It's almost like how Hollywood is casting 30 something actresses as the mother's of young 20 something starlets or how corporate career women are "opting out" in record numbers. It's like being a woman has become this huge liability. Like we're under seige. I feel like running away and joining a lesbian ashram.

It's because the air force, as compared to any other branch in the miltary, is inundated with fundamentalist christians as top brass, according to watchdog groups and individuals who take legal issue with their reported cases of religious prejudice toward non-christian air force women and men. Mostly anti-semitic stances and abuse against the non-religious. I can see their approval rating of lesbians being lower than the other branches.
