Behold Mantyhose

I'm not sure the average guy has the calves to pull off mantyhose.  Do you think they'll have control top, sheer toe, or reinforced crotch options?  Anyway...

It was kind of interesting to know that demand among male shoppers for pantyhose has apparently been soaring over the past five years. So Selfridges in London responded with a range designed exclusively for guysized legs.

They come in black, beige and charcoal.

Why would a man desire mantyhose? Well it seems that they're worn under suits to keep the legs warm and to give the hips and thighs a nice smooth line.

Why would a guy wear mantyhose?

That seems to be the question on everyone's lips today, following three UK news outlets publishing stories on Selfridge's launching a Mantihose line in their stores. Firstly, there are several problems with the articles. None of the images published with it have a thing to do with the legwear, which is designed by Unconditional. Nobody knows much about it, because it's not yet even featured on their website. All we 'may' know is that it looks sort of like loose-fitting leggings--assuming the reporter with blue shirt and tie is actually wearing a pair of the pricey (70 pound sterling) legwear.

Although I'm all for guys wearing legwear for fashion purposes--I don't know if we're at a point where that's likely to take off the same way ActivSkin legwear (the company for which I work) has done. We sell nylon/spandex legwear in opaque and sheer tights (pantyhose in the U.S. usage) and most come in full- or medium-support styles. Most of our customers are wearing them because they've had trouble with tired or cramping legs, varicose veins before their time, athletes needing warmth-without-bulk, or outdoorsmen using it for a base-layer in cold conditions.

Now, many of them--myself included--are not squeamish at all about wearing them with shorts, even the black ones. However, not too many are likely to opt for the colorful patterns shown in the e-MANcipate photos. No slight meant to Harisnya, who shot them--I've got the utmost respect for his work, and we work cooperatively together quite a bit. It's just not my particular style.

Anyways, let's all just be a bit more open-minded about this whole men's legwear thing before we start looking down noses at others, or questioning their manhood. You can stop by my blog, The Nylon Gene (www.nylongene.com) any time and tell me whether you think I look light in the loafers because I'm wearing legwear. I don't think you will (think that).

Bottom line: don't knock it til you've tried it. If you've got a job where you're on your feet all day, or getting into your forties and having some leg troubles, give ActivSkin (www.activskin.com) a try and see whether they make your legs feel much better. (BTW, ActivSkin offers a money back guarantee if you order them and don't like)
