Meet Cumbio

This is Cumbio the teenage flogger who's the new sensation in Argentina. If you didn't catch the piece in the NY Times, a flogger posts pics of themselves, their friends, and everything else about their lives - it's like social networking with just pictures.

What I love most about this intelligent young woman is that she's openly gay and it's only added to her stardom.  A virtual unknown, Cumbio made herself into a household name in Argentina by sharing her life and celebrating her orientation.  She just filmed a Nike commercial and her flogging site gets millions of hits.  I know this isn't the last we'll hear from her.

I really hope this is the last time you'll hear from her. In Argentina, we are as astonished as you are to see that she's become some kind of celebrity. She's not cute, smart or even gives a message at all. She just takes pictures of her and uploads them in a fotolog. The fashion trend of "floggers", as we know them in Argentina is not like punks or hippies: they are not against or in favor of an ideal of some kind. They just upload photos. A totally empty message to our teenegers community. I really fear this trend will start to become popular in other countries outside Latin America. I hope it doesn't, but the appearence in the New York Times makes me think the worst. And the I think the worst for us, argentinians, is such the bad fame it will give us. Everybody will think argentinians are empty people who become popular for doing nothing more than taking pictures of themselves. A lot of people here want this trend to end for several reasons. Some people turn to violence. I think the best way to end this is just not paying attention to them at all. But, as I stated earlier, with the New York Times article, I think that will not happen in quite some time...
