The Pope's Abdication

The big story today is that Pope Benedict XVI is resigning (abdicating in my book).  Betty watched a new HBO documentary Mea Maxima Culpa about sexual abuse in the church and urged me to watch it too.

I literally had to force myself to watch it.  Did you know Pope Benedict used to head the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (formerly the Inquisition) and that every single allegation of sexual abuse crossed his desk?  That's alot to ask of any person...not surprised that he doesn't have the strength for the job:

The pope and 'The Magdalene Sisters'

The abuse issues in the Catholic Church are directly related to the RCC's 'teachings' on human sexuality. The Catholic Church's doctrines are so draconian and inhumane that no Catholic who actually tried to follow them could possibly develop into a sexually healthy, responsible human being. It is still the Church's contention that normal, healthy human sexual development, with its masturbation, self-exploration, and fantasy, consists of one 'mortal sin' after another. The very process of growing up sexual, according to the Catholic Church, is deeply sinful and 'deserves' to be punished by eternal torture in Hell. So priests and nuns (as in the abusive Irish nuns of the 2002 film 'The Magdalene Sisters') never have the chance to make any healthy accomodation to their own sexuality. It's ALL forbidden, on pain of torture, for their entire lives. Terrible sexual problems are inevitably going to be common in such circumstances. What's left to Catholic religious, sexually speaking, is the UNHEALTHY---just as we've seen in the Catholic Church time and again. The cruelty of forcing such 'teachings' on children, teens, and the lay public is all too obvious.  It's got to change.
