Is It Art? Is It Porn?

This is the magazine cover that was censored by Barnes & Noble.  It features androgonous MALE model Andrej Pejic.  B&N felt that "he" would be confused as a "she" - so even though they feature other magazines with shirtless men on the cover they pulled it.

I guess the thought of heterosexual customers getting their dicks hard over a girl-boy was too much for them.  However, Andrej felt it was a question of art vs. porn:

"I think the question really isn’t the gender of the person on the cover, it’s whether it’s porn or it’s art," he explained. "And clearly, it’s art, so art really should not be censored in a democratic society."

Gender roles...sex art...either way I don't think it reflects well on the culture. This image is beautiful.

I've read about that story. Personally I don't think the parents should have been announcing how they plan on raising their child to the media. I don't agree with their decision but as a parent I don't begrudge them how to raise their own children. But why announce it?

The first question asked when a baby is born is "What is the sex?". It is not my understanding that they did choose to share this info with the media. The media went to them I thought.
Instead of the usual birth announcement of 'It's a Boy!' or 'It's a Girl!', Stocker and Witterick sent out an e-mail announcement that said, "We've decided not to share Storm's sex for now -- a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a stand up to what the world could become in Storm's lifetime (a more progressive place? ...)."

I Read It!

I read the article and had a mini discussion about it on Facebook. I could totally see myself raising my child with gender neutrality. I think what they're doing is awesome.

Does it really matter for an infant?

I doubt Storm will care at this stage, he's 4 months old. Although I remember when my oldest was a little bald infant and an elderly woman commented on my little boy. I got very offended at the fact it wasn't obvious I had a girl infant in my arms because she was wearing a pink dress. With my second child, we went more towards gender neutral clothing because we wanted to be able to use the same clothes for our next child no matter the gender. So looking back, I can see the added benefit of gender neutrality might include not getting angry at 85 year old ladies. Those children are clean, well nourished and obviously loved and that is what parents need to do for their children. I would not raise my children that way because I don't think it needs to be a secret. Yes, please come over and babysit. Go ahead and change a diaper. I haven't been elected to the "Post of I'm gonna tell you how to raise your kids" and I damn sure don't want anyone telling me how to raise mine. The most important theory of motherhood I got from my mom who said, "Your mother is the one who will always take your side."

It is not a secret

Just clarifying.

Okay

Okay, the news I read seemed to indicate it was. However as much as I would like to armchair parent little Storm, I need to get myself to bed so I can actively parent the children I actually have. Also, it's a hell of a lot better than the parents who stick their children in beauty pagnants, that's just creepy.

don't get me started

As a radical parenting Mum, it has  worked for us...we have-do unschool for 13 years now.., two of whom are graduated, with one left to follow their bliss, we too let the children dress-pick clothes that represented them as a soul, rather then a sex, when they were born we dressed them in whatever was fun, often die-tye, save-the-earth, green sustainable clothes, today they still dress as they wish, sometimes the oldest does pick clothes from the dudes department and she also wears dresses, this is not whether a parent is good-bad or indifferent..Storm will be fine! believe me..people worry way too much about the things that really don't matter, in-fact why worry at all?..life is about learning, we learn from life-we give-receive that which is in the highest of love, life is about fun! enjoy it....and as far as the image/picture, that is ART, and even if it were PORN, oh dear who would see that, how would they feel, oh dear ...really, people need to live life and enjoy the nectar it is sharing with us..live and let live!....take a walk on the wild side with us crazy liberals : )

I showed this pic to my husband

who is somewhat more conservative than me but pretty liberal. Here is our conversation about the picture.
Me: Hey honey, take a look at this picture and tell me if it's offensive.
Him: It's a dude.
Me: Are you sure you wouldn't confuse him with a woman?
Him: His face kinda looks like a chick but he's got an Adam's apple and his shoulder's aren't feminine.*shrugs and walks away
He hasn't even gotten into the discussion on Baby Storm probably because he's busy with his own kids. I doubt he cares. As for how the kids dress, if I can convince my son to wear underwear, I feel I'm one step closer to becoming a good parent.

thank you Carlin, I really

thank you Carlin, I really enjoy your picking up this pic (1st saw it with socimages) & topic as well !
and for me this is >erotic art>

off-topic : yes I've also seen the webwaves about "this Canadian family" and their sexless-child.
I am of the Beauvoir-side and that, pluwease, can we work for a "society" where each human being can live to say " I define my sex, gender & body - you define yours" ?!
and yes a) I plagiarized this from the blog with the same name and b) I am a utopian, sex-positive feminist in the true Dodson & Ross tradition ;)

In fact we were at the mall today and wanted to buy him a pair of shorts but we couldn't because he wasn't wearing any drawers. He didn't want to walk in a straight line either.
