I wanted to post something about this story but I don't like to promote women as victims - I want to show how women harness tragedy for change. 

Eman al-Obeidy, the woman who burst into the foreign press dining room on Saturday telling of her gang rape by Qaddafi's men, may just have sparked a feminist movement in Libya. Yesterday, women staged rallies in Benghazi and Tobruk in support of al-Obeidy. She has women taking to the streets - and she has exposed the use of rape as an instrument of war.

Al Jazeera has confirmed that pro-Qaddafi soldiers may be systematically raping women. A physician in Ajdabiya says that he has been finding Viagra and condoms in the pockets of the bodies of pro-Qaddafi forces who fell in battle [in Benghazi].

Condoms? Viagra? I would like to see international charges brought against these men. This situation could become the precedent for rape victims across the globe to seek redress IF we finally classify "rape" as a war crime.

Right now, "war crimes" include murder, the ill-treatment or deportation of civilian residents of an occupied territory to slave labor camps, the murder or ill-treatment of prisoners of war, the killing of prisoners, and the wanton destruction of cities, towns and villages, and any devastation not justified by military, or civilian necessity.

Doling out viagra to your troops so that they're ready to systematically rape women should be a fucking war crime. It's time.
