Pornstars Have No Inhibitions About Their Bodies. Why?

Dr. B,

With all the interesting work that you have been doing with groups, orgasms and body images within your groups how do you reconcile the openness of porno actresses with their seemingly lack of inhibitions with their bodies and their bodies’ sexual expressions especially shown in graphic detail as opposed to your what you experience in you therapy sessions. Is it that these actresses' bodies are closer to “ideal” for the most part or is it that they have a particular psychological makeup that each were born with or is it both?

S

Dear S,

Everyone has some level of inhibitions, even porn stars. However, I believe they basically like sex and the idea of getting well-paid to perform is appealing. Most X-rated actresses begin with a more ideal body for sex and what they lack is soon added or changed with cosmetic surgery.

When I ran my Bodysex groups, I had a variety of sizes represented. One of the healing aspects of any kind of group nudity is getting to see a range of body types. My private clients are only nude from the waist down so I rarely see their breasts or mid-section unless they have an issue they want to discuss. What always amazes me is the most beautiful woman was often the most critical of her body while one who was clearly over-weight or physically challenged seemed to appreciate her body the most. Go figure. Unfortunately most of us are trying to conform to some ideal, especially women.

If you have a nice naked

If you have a nice naked body, where else can you show it off and get paid. Posing still for art classes isn't about sexy bodies so doesn't really have the same oportunities as feminist porn.

S...she is doing her job.

Whether a 'porno actress' is inhibited about her body or not would never be shown on film. When acting in a porno film she is doing a job that requires her to look a certain way and act a certain way whilst having sex. If the director wanted her to look conscious of her body and inhibited she would act that way...if they want her to look uninhibited about her body (which they most often do) then she will act that way. If a porn actress failed to deliver what the director wanted her to act like with regard to her body and sexuality she would not be doing her job.
You can not compare or reconcile a ficitonal film with paid actors to real life human sexuality.

Because it's a job. As glamorous, wild, etc. it may seem, being a porn actor/actress is still just a job. Like any other kind of work, you do what you're supposed to, you get paid, everyone's happy. I really don't think the women have any magical secrets about body acceptance; it's their job and for the most part it's one they like, meaning they have shitty workdays, too, like anyone else.
