Better Orgasms. Better World.
Thom Hartman's video on truthout about how Republicans are going after women with their attempts to defund Planned Parenthood and restrict a woman's right to choose makes my blood boil. In this country corporations are people and women are NOT.
I have always objected to using male pronouns exclusively. Many of my friends insist that the pronoun “he” is generic and automatically includes women. That my friend is total Bull Shit!!! When anyone refers to “mankind” believe me, that’s what they mean— men only. Male and female pronouns are very relevant.
In our early days as a county, John Adams wife Abigail knew that the men drafting the Declaration and other documents leading to a new republic would explicitly define and extol the rights of men, but not of women. She and several other educated women were lobbying for the Constitution to refer instead to persons, people, humans, or “men and women.”
Abigail received a response from John, but it wasn’t what she was hoping for. “Depend upon it,” the future president wrote to his wife, “We know better than to repeal our Masculine systems.”
Furious, Abigail wrote back to her husband, saying if they didn’t pay attention to the Ladies, we are determined to foment a Rebellion...”
Some Declaration of Independence! In 1776 the whole process was for “men only.”
So here’s the kicker: 144 years later, our rebellion finally got women the vote in 1920. However, the Equal Rights Amendment that says, simply and entirely, “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex,” has been introduced into Congress every year since 1923 but has never passed, blocked in every case by male legislators. Yet today, corporations have the same rights as a person which has allowed Republicans to wage an all out war against women. Watch Thom Hartmann in this video and pass it on to any friend who still has a pulse.
Everyone must have equal
Everyone must have equal rights under the law regardless of sex.
I use the term they rather
I use the term they rather than he or she.
"If you ask your doctor they may suggest a treatmnt"
I've got use to doing it this way now and feels very natural, and even in places where it 1st seemed awkward it now doesn't.
What a bunch of nut jobs
As backwards, dumb and always lagging behind the rest of the liberal world as currently reigning politicians are in this prissy Catholic Austria - this makes me glad I don't live in the US. O_O
I like using singular "they" too. Which makes me find it even more unfortunate that such a possibility doesn't exist in German. If you wanted to introduce a gender neutral pronoun in German you would have to invent whole new portions of grammar. Good luck for teaching that to other people! (Yeah you got it - this won't happen anytime soon.) You know what? I wouldn't mind if English took over the whole damn world. It's such a precise and flexible language (and beautiful too).
