Baby Food by Jill Lepore demonstrates that we are a nation filled with sexual ignorance and bigotry. This piece on breast feeding and the difficulty new mothers face nursing their children in public, pumping their breast milk at the office, and the failure of the Family & Medical Leave Act to support working women's role as mother is an eye opener.  We produce the most porn and have sex on the brain 24/7, but expose one female nipple and Americans fall apart. Who are these people?

Mother told me I was too weak to suckle as a premature baby. She got a breast pump and fed me with an eye dropper until I grew stronger. She actually used a Wet Nurse for her first baby. By the time she had her last two; she was healthier and made sure her babies got their "titty dinners."

So true. You can show cleavage all the time or bare breasts in "adult movies" but try and discreetly breastfeed and you would think you are commiting murder. When I would breastfeed my children at the mall, covered with a blanket, people would stare. I always knew which people were breastfeeders, they smiled or didn't look much less gawk. Once I had a woman say something to me about breastfeeding in public. The humors thing was she was sucking on an extra large soda and very obese. I told her if it was alright for her to eat junk, it was okay for me to nourish my baby. Then I uncovered him nursing.

I too was made to feel uncomfortable by men and women when I would breastfeed in public. I could not understand why. With the right-wing, Christian lunatics in power these days who feel that all that a woman can and should be is a mother, I am surprised they do not support breastfeeding more. Hell, Christ was breastfed. There was no Similac or Enfamil during King Herod's day. What is the big deal?

I feel that breastfeeding my children was the best thing I did for them. They do not have food allergies. They miss at most three days of school a year. We are the only species of animal that regularly feeds their infants milk from another species....most humans feel their milk is not good enough I guess.
