Most women don't even know that the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology doesn't support cosmetic genital enhancement surgeries and has publicly said that "it is deceptive to give the impression that [these procedures] are accepted and routine" and has stressed that their safety and effectiveness have not been documented.
To raise public awareness of this assault on women's health and well-being, the New View Campaign will stage a protest on November 17 from 12-2 PM outside a cosmetic genital surgeon's office on E. 64th street between 2nd and 3rd aves in New York City. For more information see http://www.newviewcampaign.org/fgcs.asp. Go, Leonore.
Yahtzee!!!!
I could not possibly agree more, Dr. Betty. I recently wrote a paper for a college course in which I compared female genital cosmetic surgery to female genital mutilation. I suppose I was being a bit hyperbolic but my point was that in either case a female's genitals are modified to conform to some ridiculous socially constructed aesthetic standard. It strikes me as a bit ironic (or possibly hypocritical) when the alteration of a woman's genitals is done here and for aesthetic reasons it is called "cosmetic surgery" but when it is done in another culture for religious or other cultural reasons it is called "mutilation". The sooner we learn to appreciate and celebrate the diversity of our bodies the better off we'll be.
