Betty Dodson with Carlin Ross
Better Orgasms. Better World.
Dear Betty Dodson,
I am a gyn/obs specialist, senior consultant at the University of Copenhagen Hospital Frederiksberg. During the last few years I have had an increasing number of women (young and older) asking for correction of elongated labia minora. They complain of mechanical problems during cykling, riding and intercourse--with the labia going in to the vagina. I remember many years ago seeing vulva pictures and finaly saw a Danish TV interview with you.
I have downloaded some of your questions and answers about labia anatomy. I find the surgery controversial, but do understand that sometimes the mechanical problems do matter, although there is no concordance between the anatomy and the cited problems of the patients. So far I have had only satisfied patients (do very few corrections 4-6 pr. year.-basically reducing the length of the labia minora )--I have also denied surgery to quite a few, who in my opnion had a sexual problem etc. and not an anatomical one.
I would realy appreciate having access to a number of vulva pictures to show my patients--apart from my own "before and after pictures" and if you have stories of women with elongated labia minora who solve their mechanical problems?? What a difference there is in your concept of sexuality and female anatomy and -for example the "designer vaginas" attitude--hurra!
Hi Dorte Nielsen,
Ah yes, those damned dangles! Personally I've never talked to a woman who had a physical problem with long vaginal inner lips. It's always aesthetic. However, I do believe some women claim these problems to justify their surgery. Once I realized I wasn't genitally deformed from childhood masturbation, I became the proud owner of extended inner labia. After forty some years of looking into the same mirror with my clients, more women have this style of labia than the so-called designer "Clamshell Look" promoted by that awful man in LA who jumped on this lucrative cosmetic surgery. To name the Clamshell correctly, it's a "Pubescent Pussy."
Inner labia, whether long or extra long aren't nearly as much to deal with as a man's testicles. How do guys manage to ride bikes, wear tight pants, have sexual intercourse without their balls interfering? The idea that long inner labia get pushed inside the vagina during intercourse is pretty far out. In my twenties, I used to poke mine inside, but they alway fell right out. Nonsense I say. However, I have a dear friend who would qualify as a informed consumer and she was delighted with her labia reduction. Go figure!
Bravo for you to refuse those who appear to have a sex problem. In my estimation, far more women have sex problems than we'll ever know. I believe most women's lack of orgasm is based upon how we define sexual intercourse; a penis thrusting inside a vagina with the clitoral glans left out. Be sure to view my Genital Art Gallery. Also we have other vulva imagery on the website. If you send me your address, I'll mail my book and DVD. By the way, is Dorte a male or female name? Not that it matters. Either way, I'm crazy about your attitude.
thank you for your comment!
My name is female--short for Dorothy in danish --I am called "dortee" if pronounced in English.
I have always asked my patients about their sexlife and
usually refuse to do the surgery if they don't function-i.e. are orgasmic and happy in their relationships.
A few have for years avoided partner relationships because of their anatomy--and after giving them a long waiting period to think about it and informing them of everything that can go wrong--I give in and do the surgery. I basically reduce the length of the labia --using a laser for cutting and then sewing the to layers together. The cosmetic results are fine--as I said before, I have so far not have any unsatisfied patients.
This is not something I want to advertise--my interests in my speciality field are definitely not in this area.

I would appreciate a response from you on this topic. I have an elongated labia minora and sometimes it DOES get pushed into the vagina during intercourse, causing pain. They have even ripped a couple of times, causing ugly scar tissue between my two sets of lips. Occasionally when I cross my legs, they get pinched! When I was younger (about eight or nine years old) riding bicycles was uncomfortable for me. My labia has caused me a fair bit of pain in my sexual history, and though all of my partners have had nothing but nice things to say about them, I would really look forward to surgical "correction." Would you advise it since I DO have manual difficulties with them? I know you're not a surgeon, but this is no longer a physical issue so much as a functional one.

I highly resent having my small labia being referred to as pubescent. If you are an advocate of women accepting their genitals, then putting down small labia is hypocritical.
I recomend the book
I recomend the book "Petals", Nick Karras. Wonderful pics of womens labia.
