Why We Took Down Our Genital Art Gallery

After ten years of publishing my research project on healing genital shame, it is with a heavy heart that I inform you I must take down my Genital Art Gallery.

The new 2257 regulations stipulate that all genital imagery be subject to the same rules as the adult entertainment industry. Therefore I cannot publish submissions without a signed release and a copy of each person's driver's license. This demand ends the essential aspect of the gallery based upon anonymity which, in turn, has ended my research project. I have always wanted to challenge this ridiculous law especially as it pertains to sex education materials.

As a PhD sexologist with forty years of clinical experience, I have learned that many women's inability to enjoy orgasms with themselves or a partner is based upon the absence of visual and practical information about their sex organs. My own history is a perfect example: Until the age of 35, I believed I was genitally deformed due to my extended inner lips- the result of too much childhood masturbation! I hid my imaginary deformity by avoiding oral sex and bright lights in the bedroom- a terrible sexual handicap. Nearly every woman that has come to me in hopes of solving her lack of orgasm has never viewed her genitals in a free-standing mirror under a bright light. Doing this with a knowledgeable person who can explain the form and function of her vulva is a big step toward sexual healing.

In 1998 when my website went up, I created my Genital Art Gallery. Never again would another woman think there was something wrong with her sex organ for lack of positive imagery. By then, I knew men had their own concerns about the size and appearance of their penises, so I included them too. Viewers are asked to submit photos of their sex organs with a brief essay about their relationship to them. The fact that it was anonymous provided the necessary privacy which gave people the freedom to display their genitals and talk about masturbation practices.

By 2000 online porn had become the main source of sex education while it's only meant to be entertainment. When young women see their boyfriends masturbating to images of porn stars, they became insecure with the appearance of their own genitals. Similar to Hollywood starlets, most women in the adult industry undergo cosmetic surgery. They get nose jobs, breast implants, liposuction and extended inner lips are removed to achieve "The Clamshell Look," reminiscent of a pre-pubescent girl. Even the anus is bleached and dyed pink. Insecure and uniformed young women wanted a similar look so a booming new industry was born; laser vaginal plastic surgery. To counter this unnecessary and sometimes dangerous cosmetic surgery, my Genital Art Gallery became a research project where both women and men could share and appreciate the vast diversity of our magnificent sex organs.

So Sorry To See It Go!

I'm so pleased I got there before it closed.  I'm a little saddened as I had just prepared a second submission with pictures taken outside in bright sunlight by my sister.  I was particularly interested  in whether a female eye behind the lens caught things differently.

The whole concept of the gallery was perfect.  I have read so many things from women on here and particularly elsewhere, where they had needless concerns about how they looked.  Here, real people could see what other real people looked like and that will be something greatly missed.

Maybe one day it will rise again?

Best wishes for your big adventure with law

I'm so glad that I've managed to post my photos before the closing. During this last week I got a lot of comments - all of them praising my pussy. My big labia and bush - things so rarely seen in commercial porn. I saved my page so I'll be able to use it as a mood buster Wink

When I first started visiting your site (the old version) I wasn't ready to view realistic images of vulvae. Those I've seen before were airbrushed - sort of fairy tale-like. My relationship with my vulva wasn't very good then. I knew I was "supposed to" love her but it didn't come to me then.

I in stead viewed Betty's drawings. And as time passed I started seeing those flowery shapes when I looked at real pussies. Now I absolutely love mine. Thank you!

I think it is so sad you had to take the gallery down.
I like many other women was always ashamed of the way i looked down there and i was always shy around guys because of that, but after looking at the gallery i realized that i was actually very pretty down there. I now love my pussy and am no longer ashamed of her. I was even about to post my own pictures but sadly i waited to long. I hope someday things will change and i will be able to add my pictures. Thank you so much for all you have done, you have helped me be comfortable with my body and love they way i look.

I was really sorry to see that the gallery is no longer. I was wondering about the 2257 regulation and the grandfather laws. I was thinking that what was already posted was ok, because it was before the new regulation took effect. I know that it puts an end to your research project, but I know you will survive and grow even more inyour current and future endeavors. I was proud to have my penis posted in the gallery. Thanks again for all that you have done for all of us. You are a great teacher!!!

What about hosting it overseas???

This is a sad news.... This law probably does not apply everywhere... perhaps you could host this portion of your site on an foreign domain... NZ, Australia,....

Cheers,

It really is terribly sad that the Genital Art Gallery is gone. It was a beautiful and enlightening look into the art of sex organs that we all share. Not only did it give many the opportunity to display and become proud of their own genitals, but it gave everyone a chance to see and grow from the experience of seeing incredible variety. I found it so fascinating to see how different everyone could look. It was also interesting to see the similarities and to just enjoy the lines and shapes in a completely non-sexual way, It was perhaps the most positive when you first see that someone has finally accepted who they are for how they really look. The General Art Gallery really was a magical thing.

Similarly there was a gallery of 100s of photos of men's penises (all sent in and displayed anonymously) by a man in the UK... It was all part of a documentary he was making about penis size. I suppose he must have done it before this new regulation that resulted in you closing it down - though he displayed his in an actual gallery, not online.

In any case, I think it is just such depressing news, and I hope that in some way or another, there can be a way to compromise, or find another way to make it work. Hmm.

RIP General Art Gallery.

I'm disappointed to find this out, too. Glad I was able to submit my pics, stories, etc. and help on the earlier version of Betty's site. I hope the gallery comes back.
