What's The Matter With Kansas?

This episode is dedicated to the life and work of Dr. George Tiller and all those who've fought to protect our reproductive rights and support intentional motherhood. It's time to revive feminism...this time by honoring pussy power. Here's the link to the book A New View of a Woman's Body:

Dear B & C,

Here in the UK we have a reputation for being sexually repressed (some of us are!) but the sexual repression in the USA seems absolutely shocking - and of a different order entirely - by comparison.

The murder of Dr. Tiller is, as you imply, nothing short of sexual terrorism. And like you, I agree that the struggles that defined the feminist project in the 1970s do seem to need reiterating. Over the last couple of decades, I have noticed a distinct shift back to the 60s in terms of gender politics inspite of the strides made in employment legislation and equal rights. It's as if the capitalist project is only interested in equality if such values lead to a more manageable workforce and, in all other areas, the mood is becoming increasingly regressive.

So congratulations to you both for your firm stand against the forces of sexual repression; having ousted Bush, the back-lash against Obama might be stronger than anticipated and we have to keep making the personal as political as possible.

Best wishes

Abortion

As usual with pro-death women activists,it's all about me, me, me and egocentrism with women. What I want supercedes everything else because my wishes are more important than anything or anyone else.
What happened to Dr. George Tiller was murder and or terrorism if you wish, but no different than what he did on an average daily basis. Both are wrong and both should be punished.
Women always talk about my rights. What about the rights of the child? Well we will just call it some inanimate name like tissue. Yea. That's what will do,to ease our conscience.
Look at the people in your family pictures, on what day did they become human and not tissue.
Reproductive right? Don't you mean the convenient right to kill if it's not convenient for me to have a baby at this time?

It also cracks me up that women want project some mythical maternal instinct. Hah!
The lines have been so selfishly blurred by feminists that women get to determine if it is a child or not.

Example -a woman is driving and is shot in the stomach and the baby dies. Is it tissue or a baby? Should whoever shot her be charged with murder? Many times they are charged with murder. Now it is discovered she was driving to get an abortion. If she was on her way to get an abortion then it's got to be tissue. Now, What if she was driving to a prenatal appointment to check the health of her baby and herself? Is it a baby or tissue?

I thought we had moved past all this

The killing of Dr. Tiller threw me right back into the 70's, perhaps even earlier. I truly thought women had advanced and always felt so proud that I had played a role in this advancement. But, the religious fanatics who kill to protect life, which in itself is an oxymoron, are no different then the terrorist we fight over seas and yet we allow this in our country. Abortion has become another "don't ask, don't tell" subject in Washington. Even Obama feels he has to add "I support abortion in the most extreme cases". Well, every unwanted pregnancy IS an extreme case, but then no man has had to deal with this issue in their life. These people don't care about any unborn child, all they care about is control over our bodies. Don't ask, don't tell, sweep it under the carpet, be shameful and ask for God's forgiveness. Bull shit. It's my body, I had 2 abortions, I watched my older sister being declared mentally unstable (which she wasn't, that was the only way to have a legal abortion), I watched my mother deal with the guilt of having had an abortion out of an affair she had with a married man and how it ruined her life to the day she died. No woman should have to go through this. I'm angry that we now have this topic back on the table again. Take to streets? Damn right I'll take to streets and I'll tell my story to anyone who will listen. We have not taken these religious fanatics seriously because we thought they were crazy and had no power. We fucked up...it's time to make it right again.

D.M. Yes, I'm worth more

D.M.

Yes, I'm worth more than a fetus. I'm a person who can breathe, love, create and express myself independent of another person. I can get pregnant and procreate on my terms as many times and I do and do not want....that's the power of my womanhood and it's mine NOT yours.

And you're point about a pregnant woman getting shot and when her fetus dies prosecuting the shooter for murder - most states don't have a provision in their murder statutes for fetuses. This is first year law school crap.

I suggest getting your facts straight before engaging in legal reasoning. Leave it to the pros.

Female Sexual Repression

Hello Ladies,

Wonderful speech!!! I too am very saddened and outraged by this situation. An innocent person was murdered, pure and simple. I have also felt a backslide as far as gender issues are concerned for quiet some time now.

Abortion issues do come down to control of women. A single woman with a child is a formula for poverty. That fact is just basic math. Having children whether intentional or not is a huge burden both financially and emotionally. This is something almost every woman feels deep down inside and dare not admit to herself or anyone else for fear she will be called a monster. American heterosexual male culture glorifies both the madonnas and whores. A women is only allowed to be a mother (she had better be a perfect one) or a whore (she had better be a sexy-as men define sexy-one). I don't like only having two choices so I am going to opt out of the game for a little while. I am taking control of my pussy. I have never had an orgasm through intercourse. I love to masturbate and always reach the Big O myself. If I ever feel like including some hot guy in my masturbation routine, I will. However, sex will be on my terms. I cum first with my own hand or vibrator on my clit and penetration only if he wears a condom.

After all, we have the pussies and that is what they want. Pussy is all they have ever wanted.

peace,
Safa

Agony of decision

My singular view: Dr. Tiller was not an atheiest or libertine. He was a midwesterner with a deep conscience and considered values. He did not do late-term abortions to advance a political agenda . He did them for the most human of reasons:He could use his scientific knowledge to prevent a malformed fetus from birth. From what I have read, none of these abortions were whimsically undertaken. He investigated very fully the health of the mother and fetus. Again, this is one man's opinion

I couldn't agree more!

I couldn't agree more with your words eleni223, thank you so much for writing what you did!  Abortion is the dirty topic that no policitician has the balls to come out and openly support.  They'll mouth the words, almost support it, but just in case it would piss off too many constituents, they stop short of what's really needed, unwavering support and protection of abortion laws, rights, clinics, providers, clinic staff, volunteers and patients, period!  I'm so angry about the assassination of Dr. George Tiller, about the very real terrorist attack that happened that day and about the fact that the man who murdered him is being lauded as some kind of fucking hero, it's disgusting pure and simple.  I don't believe in God or Jesus, up until a few months ago I did, but it doesn't matter to these people if you don't believe, they will FORCE everyone to follow along with their twisted ideology anyway!  There is no excuse for letting this tyrrany continue.  I own my
body,  no one else, not my husband, not my parents, and certainly not
some sickening, woman-hating murderer!  I'm ready to stand up for my rights, for all our rights.  There can be no question now, when abortion rights and abortion providers are being threatened, everyone stands to lose!

Thank you so much

My dear friends, thank you so much for posting this video. As a young woman who absolutely never wants to have children, I am very lucky to have never had to go through the agony of making this sort of choice. I have often thought about it though, about the fact that I am financially stable and in a good relationship with the likely father; what right would I have to make the choice of abortion? I am so glad that there are feminists out there fighting for the right to choose in any situation, because we do and SHOULD have that right. I still don't know what I would do were I faced with that sort of choice, but you have allowed me to think about it again in a way where I can be honest with myself, my thoughts not clouded by the "when does life begin?" sort of questions that have so often confused me when it comes to this difficult topic. You guys rock. Keep up the good work!

Oh, Kansas...

What IS the matter with Kansas?! As a resident of Kansas, I was outraged to see that in our last election at least one of the candidates elected to the state school board endorsed a program of abstinence only sex education. If we're going to make abortion illegal or impossible to obtain, we ought to at least teach our kids how to properly use contraceptive methods and practice safe sex so that they don't get pregnant in the first place. Betty and Carlin, I'm glad that you promote sex education that is open and honest.

Regarding Dr. Tiller-if you research his clinic, most (if not all) of the abortions that he performed were planned pregnancies that had gone horribly wrong. What he did was provide a difficult service to women and their families at a very difficult time in their lives. Denying a woman the right to have an abortion implies that you know her circumstances, and we don't. Is she being beaten by her partner? Does the baby have a condition that will make its only moments of life outside the womb excruciating agony? Is giving birth a danger to the mother? Only a woman and her doctor know that.

As an advocate for disability rights, I don't think that a baby should be aborted simply because it has a disability that will still allow it to be a functioning human being with the capacity to love life (such as Down's); however, since I have never been faced with the prospect of raising a child I can't honestly say what I would do if I were facing an unwanted pregnancy or the prospect of raising a child with a disability. I was adopted as an infant because my birth mother was able to make the heartbreaking decision to carry a pregnancy to full term and then give up her baby. I would like to think that if I were in her situation I would have the guts to make that same decision, but I don't know for sure that I would because I *haven't been there.* It's time that we stopped judging and allowed women and their doctors to make an informed choice on their own. It's time we started educating.

Let's ask God!

Mon, 06/08/2009 - 23:10

D.M. asks "Look at the people in your family pictures, on what day did they become human and not tissue."

Let's ask God about this one. According to the creation narrative in the book of Genesis (Gen. 2:7) - "Then
the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
"
According to God one is not a living being, a human if you will, until
one is out of the womb and breathing through the nostrils. This
interpretation is in keeping with traditional Jewish Law, Halacha,
which, as explained to me by the Rabbi with whom I studied the Hebrew
Bible, indicates that "...a baby...becomes a full-fledged human being when the head
emerges from the womb
. Before then, the fetus is considered a 'partial
life
.' " (http://www.religioustolerance.org/jud_abor.htm).

If you don't like this explanation of when one becomes "a human and not tissue" take it up with God.....they're her rules.
